Wilma Ruth Barnes

Wilma Ruth Barnes, 67, of Vandalia died Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 at her daughter’s home.

She was born Dec. 27, 1949 in Fulton, the daughter of Clarence and Virginia Ruth Martin Staats. She was married to Buford Lindell Barnes on Feb. 23, 1968 in Vandalia. He survives.

Other survivors include one son, Bruce Barnes of Vandalia; one daughter, Shelley Yager and husband, Tony of Vandalia; four grandchildren, Aaron Hull, Hydie Flowers, and Halynna Yager, all of Vandalia, and Kyley Barnes of Center; and three great grandchildren, Ian, Mya, and Natalya.

She was preceded in death by one brother, James Dale Staats.

Mrs. Barnes was a lifetime area resident and was Catholic by faith.

She had previously worked at Bobbie Brooks, and then served as cook at WERDCC for 12 years prior to her retirement. She was a proud supporter of the American Heart Association, the Wounded Veterans, ASPCA and breast cancer memorabilia from Bradford Exchange.

She enjoyed her cockatoos and cockatiel, fishing and spending time with her family. She was famous for her quotes and was never at a loss for words.

A memorial celebration will be hosted by her family at a later date.
