Garry L. Stewart

Funeral services for Garry Lee Stewart of Elsberry were at 1:30 p.m., Sunday at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. The Rev. Paul Garven, pastor of the Elsberry United Methodist Church, the Rev. Bob Norvel, pastor of the Annada Community Christian Church, and the Rev. Tom Sullenger, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau officiated with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery.

Visitation was from 4-8 p.m., Saturday at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.

Mr. Stewart, 68, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was born Dec. 11, 1948 in Louisiana, he was the son of James Wayne and Trula Lee Hemphill Stewart. A graduate of Elsberry High School, Garry went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in education from Mizzou. Garry was united in marriage on Sept. 6, 1969 in Elsberry to Pamela Kay Sullenger. This union was blessed with two children, Garry Wayne and Sara.

Garry served his country in the United States Army from Oct. 21, 1970 until he was honorably discharged on May 8, 1972. He worked as the vocational agriculture teacher, building and grounds supervisor and the bus transportation superintendent for the Lincoln County R-2 School District for many years, retiring in 2001.

Garry also taught hunter safety courses for a number of years. In his free time, Garry loved tinkering with tractors, chain saws, fixing small gas engines and being on the farm. He was a longtime member of the Elsberry United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 47 years, Pam Stewart of Elsberry; their son, Garry W. Stewart and wife, Roberta of O’Fallon; a daughter, Sara Manion of Platte City; and five grandchildren, Kristen, Emily and Carter Manion, and Noah and Scarlett Stewart. Garry also leaves a sister-in-law, Lois Stewart of Elsberry; brother-in-law, the Rev. Tom Sullenger and wife, Candie of Cape Girardeau; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Trula Stewart; and his brother, James “Keith” Stewart, who died Feb. 22, 2014.

Serving as pallbearers were Wade King, Ronnie Vaughn, Jr., Bill Halley, Craig Hemphill, Larry Wright, Bob Wright, Grant Hemphill and Bill Blakey. Honorary pallbearers were Harry Patton, Don Mirick, Bob Elstrom and all of Garry’s good friends from the coffee shop.
