Davet Ray Matthews

Davet Ray Matthews, 78, of Middletown died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday at Bibb-Veach Funeral home in Bowling Green with the Rev. Randall Cape officiating. Burial was in Troy City Cemetery.

Visitation was from 1 p.m., until time of services at the funeral home.

Davet was born Dec. 20, 1938 in Breckinridge County, Ken., the son of David Ray and Lillen Overton Matthews. On Sept.11, 1998 in Georgia he married Debra K. Hayes. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Daniel Carter and wife, Sue of Belton, Va., and James Dailey of Roswell, Ga.; two daughters, Kimberly Reynolds and husband, Steven of Middletown, Heather Dailey of Loganville, Ga.; four grandchildren, Corey and Zackary Reynolds, Emma and Jimmy Carter; eight great-grandchildren, three brothers, Grover C. Matthews and wife, Linda, William F. Matthews, Roger L. Matthews; a sister, Betty Sue Manning; a special cousin, Denver Matthews; close friend, Tommy Burke.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Billie Jane Matthews.

Davet grew up in Kentucky, spent most of his life in Georgia, Florida and moved to Middletown in September 2016. He was a member of the Bible Way Baptist Church in Powder Springs, Ga., and served in the US Army. Davet was an over the road truck driver for Allied and United Van Lines and worked on the oil rigs in Louisiana when he was younger. Davet was a member of the American Legion in Florida and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and loved ones.

Pallbearers were Corey Reynolds, Zackary Reynolds, Kory Brewster, Kyle Brewster, Dan Carter and Steve Reynolds.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.
