Margaret Sue Harness

Margaret Sue Harness, 95, died Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Lynn’s Heritage House in Louisiana.

A memorial services were held Monday at the Olney Methodist Church, with visitation with family at 10 a.m., and services at 11 a.m. Burial was at Olney Cemetery immediately following. A luncheon followed at Olney Methodist Church.

Formerly of Olney, she was born Feb. 11, 1922 near rural Louisiana to Sue Shannon Rule and Edward Byram Rule, Jr. She graduated from Bowling Green High School and attended the University of Missouri- Columbia. She married James Harness Oct. 3, 1942 and they lived on the family farm near Olney for nearly 50 years until his death. In 1991, she married Allan Hughes and they resided on the farm near Olney.

She is survived by two daughters, Jamie H. Tomek of Olney, and Joyce Sweet and husband, Chris of Chicago. Other survivors include three granddaughters, Nikki Anderson (Michael Kozien) and Shelley Anderson (Tyler Huffman) of Chicago and Ashley Anderson (Eric Pendergrass) of Fort Collins, Colo., as well as three great granddaughters; Eleanor Joyce Huffman, Annika Margaret Anderson-Kozien and Sage Susan Pendergrass and a step great grandson, Henry Lott Pendergrass.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Harness, her second husband, Allan Hughes and her parents.

She was a home maker her entire life and active in the community as a Sunday School teacher, 4-H leader, member of the Eureka Club and Daughters of the American Revolution, Bowling Green Chapter. She traveled extensively and was an active member of the Olney Methodist Church.

Memorials can be made to the Olney Methodist Church, the Pike County Nurses Scholarship Fund or the Frank Hoffman Scholarship Fund (for students in the tutoring program) at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Chicago.
