Sammy Lee Harrelson Jr.

Sammy Lee Harrelson, Jr., 66, of New Hartford died Monday, May 22, 2017 at his home.

Memorial services will be held at noon, Saturday at Bibb-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green with the Rev. Bob Hoehn officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.– noon, Saturday at the funeral home.

Sam was born Aug. 10, 1950 in Curryville the son of Samie Lee and Barbara Ruth Worrell Harrelson. On April 30, 1972 in Bellflower he married Sandra Frye. She survives.

Other survivors include son Tim Harrelson and wife, Brandy of New Hartford; a daughter, Emily Harrelson of New Hartford; granddaughters, Caramia and Josephine Harrelson; brothers, David Harrelson and wife, Jerri of Bowling Green, Charles Harrelson of Columbia, and George Harrelson of New Hartford; uncle, Gerald Worrell of Greenbriar, Tenn.; aunt Shirley Buffa of the state of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, Charlie and Maude Harrelson; and his maternal grandmother, Angie Beabout.

Sam lived in New Hartford most of his life, and was affiliated with the New Hartford Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War obtaining the rank of staff sergeant. He earned a bronze star for meritorious achievement, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Sharp-Shooter Award.

As a youth, he farmed for Don Gray and Wayland Wilhoit. Upon returning home from his service, he farmed for Motley Brothers for 30 years, and most recently for himself.

From 1998-2016 he worked for the Bowling Green R-1 School District as a maintenance worker, bus barn supervisor and bus driver. Sam was known for his love of John Deere tractors.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital, J.B. & Greeta B. Arthur Cancer Center in Mexico or the Pike County Hospice.
