Joyce Ann Chatman

Joyce Ann Bryant Chatman, 70, of Vandalia died Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 with family by her side at her home.

Funeral services were Saturday at noon at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia with the Rev. Melvin McCaleb officiating. Interment was in Vandalia Cemetery.

Visitation was Saturday from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the funeral home.

She was born March 16, 1947 in Hannibal, the daughter of Robert Grant and Bertie Mae Allison Bryant. She married Roger Allen Chatman on Sept. 21, 1963 in Vandalia. He survives.

Survivors include her husband, Roger of Vandalia; one son, Anthony A. Chatman and wife, Denise of Louisiana; three daughters, Angelia S. Chatman of Columbia, Kimberly Y. Chatman of Columbia, and Melissa L. Ingram of Columbia; step-daughter, Mary Bass of Kansas City; one brother, Bernard Kent and wife, LaTanya Chatman of Louisiana; three sisters, Brenda Perkins and husband, Donnell of Vandalia; Barbara Mahaney and husband, Robert of Columbia; and Pamela Berry of Columbia; brother-in-law, James Starks of Columbia; uncle, Brick English and wife, Kathy of New Jersey; aunt Elizabeth Shepard of Vandalia; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Grant Bryant and mother, Bertie Mae Berry; Clifford Leonard Berry Sr., who was a father to Joyce since she was age two; one brother, Clifford L. Berry Jr.; one sister, Geraldine Starks; one granddaughter, Tyra S. Chatman, and one nephew, Darren Perkins.

She attended Lincoln and Van-Far Schools. Joyce worked for over 28 years as a printer at the Louisiana Plastics factory. She then worked for five years at the Cerf Brothers Factory in Vandalia, until she retired due to health concerns.

Joyce was a lifelong Vandalia area resident and member of the Second Christian Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, watching her soaps, football, and basketball. Joyce and Roger were members of the “Wheels of Choice” motorcycle club for 18 years, where she enjoyed traveling and participating in the area poker runs.

She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and friends.

Pallbearers were Marshon Lee, Crystal Stevens, Martha Stevenson, Lalita Smith, Erwin Logan, Carl Griffin, Sharon Connors, and Jamie Connors. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Bishop, George Johnson, Bonnie Dean, Donnie Chatman, and Daryl Chatman.
