Charles F. Holman

Charles Frederick Holman died Monday, Jan. 29, 2018 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018 at 11 a.m., at the Second Christian Church in Vandalia.

Visitation was Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the Second Christian Church in Vandalia.

He was born Feb. 7, 1933 in Vandalia, the son of Albert Lee and Mary Elizabeth McPike Holman. He married Imogene Minnie Douglas on Sept. 15, 1954 in Vandalia. She preceded him in death on May 27, 2016.

Survivors include one daughter, Sheila Ann Owens of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Helen Holman of Vandalia; three grandchildren, Felicia C. Liddell and husband, Larry of Omaha, Relonda N. Owens of Omaha, Charles E. Owens and Jessica Anderson of Norfolk, Neb.; four great-grandchildren, Reagan Anderson, Braylon Owens, Charlize Owens and Journey Owens; also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Imogene; two brothers, Robert and Clarence Holman; and two sisters, Hazel Acuff and Jean Shelton.

Charles was a lifelong Vandalia resident. He attended Lincoln elementary school in Vandalia and was a 1950 graduate of the Garfield High School in Mexico. While in high school he helped at a local farm. Charles was drafted into the Army in March of 1953, serving until March of 1955.

He was employed at Harbison-Walker Refractories for 47 years and retired in March of 1988.

Charles was a long-time member, elder and deacon of the Second Christian Church in Vandalia. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Charles was known to most people as “Chan.” To all he came across, he left a lasting impression. He never met a stranger and would talk to anyone he came across. Charles was always willing to sing a solo when asked. His favorite song was, “I Won’t Complain.”

Memorials are encouraged to the Second Christian Church in Vandalia.
