Lady Owls Advance To Semifinal, Will Square Off With Elsberry; Boys Eliminated In Opener
The (3) Silex Lady Owls advanced to the semifinals of the MSHSAA Class 2 District 5 Tournament on Saturday with a 52-25 win over (6) Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience in the opening round of tournament action.
The Lady Owls outscored Collegiate (also known as the Owls) 17-6 in the first quarter as Allison Harmon scored six points and Chloe Kinion threw in four for Silex.
The pace slowed in the second quarter for both teams. The Lady Owls held Collegiate to just two points as Harmon added four more and Mollie Stanek finished the first half with four points of her own for Silex.
Harmon bumped her game total to 18 points with an eight-point third quarter as Silex increased their lead to 22 points by the end of the quarter.
The Lady Owls outscored Collegiate 12-6 in the fourth to beat the lesser Owls by twenty-seven points.
Harmon finished the opening round with 20 points to earn the Community State Bank TribCast Player of the Game.
Also scoring for Silex: Lexi Plackemeier, 8 points; Chloe Kinion, 6 points; Mollie Stanek, 6 points; Kate McDonald, 4 points; Julia Grateke, 2 points; Casie Pruitt, 2 points; Izzy Sgroi, 1 point.
The Lady Owls will face the host school (2) Elsberry in the semifinals tonight on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
The Lady Indians have beaten Silex twice this season, downing the Lady Owls 31-14 at the Clopton Tournament and 19-11 last Thursday.
Elsberry defeated (7) McKinley 54-14 in the opening round. The other semifinal on Tuesday will feature (1) New Haven against (4) Crystal City.
If Silex can defeat Elsberry, they will advance to the championship game which is slated for Friday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
The (7) Silex Owls were eliminated from the tournament in the opening round game on Monday, Feb. 19 against (2) New Haven, 33-19.
The Owls jumped out to an early advantage and defensively held the Shamrocks to just four points in the opening quarter. Charles Turbyeville knocked down a pair of three-pointers and the Owls got baskets from Brandon Peasel and Landon Harlan to lead New Haven, 10-4 after the first quarter.
New Haven scored two baskets to Silex’s one in the second quarter. New Haven got a pair from John Fleer and Nick Kientzy scored for Silex in the second quarter as the Owls went to the break leading 12-8.
New Haven came out in the third quarter ready to score despite good defense by the Owls. The Shamrocks knocked down four three-pointers while Silex only managed three free throws.
In the final frame, Turbyeville got another three but it wouldn’t be enough as New Haven added 11 more points.
Turbyeville led the Owls with nine points. Peasel finished the game with five. Nick Kientzy and Harlan each had a bucket and Anthony Ryans ended with one point.
Turbyeville was named the Community State Bank TribCast Player of the Game for his efforts in the opening round loss.
