Louisiana Girls Fall To Top-Seeded South Shelby In District Opener; Boys Kick Off Tourney Against Paris

The (8)Louisiana Lady Bulldogs season came to an end on Monday with a 56-30 loss to (1)South Shelby in the opener of the Class 2 District 6 Tournament at Canton.

Although the loss seemed lopsided, the Lady Bulldogs stayed close most of the first half and improved greatly over a 44 point loss to the LadyBirds last Friday night.

In the opening quarter, Brianna St. Clair scored five points and Mechia Campbell added a bucket to trail 9-7 after the opening eight minutes.

Kyjiah Clark added a three ball in the second quarter, Campbell scored again and Caitlyn Gloe added a basket for Louisiana.

Logan Wise scored eight points for South Shelby in the quarter and the LadyBirds began to pull away late in the first half, outscoring the Bulldogs 17-7 in the second.

The third quarter was devastating for Louisiana as South Shelby poured in twenty-two points to extend their lead to twenty-two heading the final quarter.

The third could have been worse if not for three more points from St. Clair and a pair of treys from Clark to up her game total to eleven points.

The LadyBirds coasted to the win with a 9-6 fourth quarter to advance to the semifinals against (5)Canton on Wednesday.

Canton scored a mild upset of defending district champion (4)Scotland County, 35-32 on Monday.

Louisiana will lose starters Brianna St. Clair, Raelee and Jasmin Burse to graduation alone with seniors Kayla Lindsay and Kaily Thurman at the end of the year.

The Lady Bulldogs completed their final season in the Clarence Cannon Conference with a 5-19 record for the year.

“While it was a tough way to end the season, I am extremely proud of the effort from the team. They improved throughout the season and have developed as player,” noted Coach Jamie Boyd.

The boys are seeded third and will take on (6) Paris in the opening round tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 21). If they’re victorious, they will move on to the semifinal on Friday to face the winner of the 2/7 matchup between Van-Far and Clopton.

The championship game for the boys is slated for Saturday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
