Silex Advances To Quarterfinal With Sectional Victory
Owls Blank North Shelby To Win Districts
The Silex Owls won the Class 1 District 12 championship last week with a 10-0 shutout victory over North Shelby.
The tournament took place at Community R-VI last week. As the top seed, the Owls had an opening round bye and then eliminated Madison in the district semifinal 9-2.
The Owls racked up seven runs in the first inning. North Shelby loaded the bases on three walks to start the inning. Charles Turbyeville hit an RBI single to plate the first run. An RBI walk by Scott Creech scored Colby Gruenloh. Justin Havlik grounded out but scored Wyatt Gruenloh. Tommy Grote walked before Brian Henke stepped up and blasted a three-run triple. A groundout by Hunter Lavy scored Henke to round out scoring in the first. Silex took a 7-0 lead into the second inning.
Silex scored two more runs in the third inning. Grote and Henke started off the inning as both hit singles. With two outs Jake Adams cranked a two-RBI double to score Grote and Henke.
The Owls scored their final run in the fourth inning. Turbyeville reached on a fielder’s choice then scored on an RBI single by Grote.
Henke pitched a beauty. North Shelby went down in order through the first four innings with Henke striking out six. The Raiders managed to get the bases loaded in the fifth. The Owls got the first two outs then the Raiders managed two singles and Henke walked a batter to load them. Their lead-off batter grounded out to Turbyeville at third to end the game.
Henke earned the Community State Bank TribCast Player of the Game giving up only two hits and one walk in the game and struck out seven. He also was 2-3 with three RBIs at the plate.
Adams was 2-3 with two RBIs. Turbyeville and Creech were 1-3 with an RBI each. Grote was 2-3 with an RBI. Havlik and Lavy also notched RBIs in the district championship.
State Sectional
Silex came from behind to seal the win in the State Sectional on Monday, May 21.
The Owls had to clamp down on errors after three mistakes which led to two runs for Jamestown in the top of the first inning.
Silex plated a run in the first. Jake Adams led off with a single then scored on a sacrifice fly by Charles Turbyeville.
The Owls tied the score in the bottom of the third as Havlik scored on an error.
Silex sealed the win in the bottom of the sixth inning. Colby Gruenloh walked and Wyatt Gruenloh singled before a two-RBI single by Havlik which earned him the Community State Bank TribCast Player of the Game.
Both teams used three pitchers and left a lot of ducks on the pond with Silex leaving 11 and Jamestown leaving 10 runners on base.
Henke started the game and pitched four and one-third innings. He gave up three hits and seven walks and struck out seven batters.
Dillon Magill came in to relieve Henke. He had five walks and struck out two batters.
Scott Creech picked up the win with one and two-thirds innings of work. He gave up one hit, a walk and struck out two.
Adams, Turbyeville and Havlik each had hits. Havlik and Turbyeville each had RBIs in the Sectional.
Jamestown pitcher Austin Flippin went three innings and gave up two runs on three hits, three walks and struck out seven. Cole Theissen pitched two and a third innings and issued five walks and two Ks. Dalton Oerly ended the game and gave up two runs on one hit.
Silex will take on 14-5 St. Elizabeth in the State Quarterfinal on Wednesday, May 23.

Indians Defeat New Haven To Claim Second Consecutive District Title
The Van-Far Indians won the Class 2 District 4 championship last week with a 14-0 shutout victory over New Haven.
The tournament took place in Louisiana last week. As the top seed, the Indians had an opening round bye and then eliminated the host school in the district semifinal 10-0.
Van-Far got on the board early with two runs in the first inning. Logan Wilson led off with a double then Caden Wilburn and Treyson Culwell each walked. a sac fly by Nathan Beatty plated a run and Wilburn scored as well in the first.
The second inning spelled disaster for New Haven. The Indians added 12 more runs in the second on eight hits. Colten Jensen led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI triple by Wilson. An RBI double by Hodde scored Wilson. An RBI single plated Hodde.
Caden Wilburn blasted a three-RBI triple in his second at-bat of the inning and scored on another RBI single by Hodde. Treyson Culwell rounded out the scoring for the inning with a two-RBI home run blast.
Van-Far led 14-0 after the second inning. Starting pitcher Josh Hodde shut New Haven down on the offensive side.
He struck out the first three in order. In the second August Ranhorst led off with a single before Hodde issued walks to the next two batters to load the bases. He got out of the jam by retiring the next three batters with the strike-out.
Hodde added five more strikeouts to end the game with 11. He gave up just one hit and two walks.
Wilson came in to start the fifth inning and struck out three batters in order to close out the inning.
Hodde earned the Community State Bank TribCast Player of the Game for his performance at the mound and went 2-3 with two RBIs.
Caden Wilburn was 2-4 with four RBIs. Wilson was 3-4 with an RBI. Treyson Culwell had the 2-RBI homer and RBIs were also recorded by Beatty, Cody James and Colten Jensen.
The Indians were scheduled to play in the State Sectional on Monday, May 21 but the game was postponed due to weather. The Sectional will take place today (Tuesday, May 22) against a tough 21-9 Valle Catholic team at 5 p.m.
