Theodore ‘Ted’ Allen Hesse

Memorial services for Theodore “Ted” Allen Hesse, 86, of Vandalia will be held Friday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m., at the Vandalia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joel Montgomery officiating. Interment will be a private family service.

Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m., until the time of the service at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bienhoff Funeral Home.

Mr. Hesse died Friday, Sept. 14, 2018 at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Mexico.

He was born June 5, 1932 in Farber, the son of Harold Price and Lona LaVerne Allen Hesse. Following his father’s death, he was also privileged to have a step father, Carl Eugene Whitesides, play an important role in his life.

He was married to Joyce Nadine Fast in Hutchinson, Kan., on April 16, 1953. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2013.

Survivors include one son, Mark Hesse and wife, Deborah of Danville, Ill.; three daughters, Deborah Barry and husband, Timothy of Somers, Conn., Lona Oostdyk and husband, Garrett of Mahomet, Ill., and Jean Greene and husband, Matthew of Springdale, Ark.; one sister, Patricia Daly and husband, Bob of La Porte, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Hesse and an infant sister, Lona Elizabeth Hesse.

Mr. Hesse was primarily a lifetime area resident with 12 years spent in Illinois. He was a 1950 graduate of Hannibal High School and attended one year of college before he entered the U.S. Navy on May 31, 1951 where he attained the rank of Aviation Machinist 3rd Class.

He was honorably discharged May 28, 1955. He was a farmer and worked as a foreman at NARCO refractories retiring in 1997. Mr. Hesse was a member of the Vandalia Presbyterian Church where he sang in the church choir.

He was also a member of the Vandalia Country Club, Laddonia American Legion Post 510, and the Masonic Lodge in both Danville, IL and Vandalia.

He loved golfing, storytelling, gardening and taking care of his lawn. He played youth volleyball locally and later in the Navy. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, visiting their children and family including the in-laws, their nieces, nephews and cousins.
