Shannon Culwell Jr.

Shannon Mayo Culwell, Jr., 46, of Vandalia died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia surrounded by his family at his side.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia. Pastors Joel Montgomery and Bob Hoehn will officiate. Entombment will be in the family mausoleum in the Vandalia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m., Saturday at Waters Funeral Home of Vandalia.

Shannon was born Feb. 13, 1972, in Mexico, the son of Shannon Mayo and Linda Lou Gooch Culwell, Sr. He was united in marriage to Felicity Goodpasture on April 13, 1996, in Vandalia.. Felicity preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 2017.

Survivors include two sons, Treyson Eugene Goodpasture Culwell and Reece Shannon Culwell; one daughter, Annalynn Goodpasture Culwell, all of rural Vandalia; parents, Shannon and Linda Gooch Culwell, Sr. of rural Vandalia; a sister, Sheila Culwell Frost and husband, Greg and nephew, Samuel Middleton of rural Vandalia; mother-in-law, Charlene Goodpasture of rural Center; sisters-in-law and their families, Emily Davies and husband, Darrin Shelby, Dustin and Delaney of Dawn, Leticia Hulse and husband, Ryan, Selby, Edward, Burt, Cecelia and Anna of Hannibal, Greta Hopke and husband, Justin Garrett and Kate of rural Vandalia; grandmother-in-law, Catherine Lackner of Cuba. Shannon is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and close friends.

Shannon grew up on a farm in rural Vandalia and was a member of Central Union Church at an early age. He graduated from Van-Far High School in 1990. Shan went on to further his education at the University of Missouri and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in general ag. Upon graduation, Shannon moved back to his roots and married Felicity Goodpasture.

Shannon and Felicity joined his parents farming operation and purchased their own land south of Vandalia. They also operated Culwell Custom Spraying and Channel Seed dealership. Shannon loved the life on the farm. He cherished the sunrise every morning and the sunset every evening over the land he worked.

Growing up Shannon was active in the 4-H and while in high school he was a member of the FFA and national honor society. Shan also was a standout basketball player at Van-Far High School. Shan was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He was a member of the Vandalia Lions Club and served on the Vandalia Rural Fire Department.

Away from work, Shannon had several hobbies including snowmobiling, camping, golfing, and attending Cardinal games are just a few. Shannon was a compassionate man of faith and was known to lend a helping hand when neighbors, friends and family were in need. Shan was a dedicated man with a good sense of humor.

Shannon’s pride and joy was his family. He cherished the time spent with his children, attending their school functions, sporting events, and life growing up on the farm with them.

Pallbearers will be Jason Bean, Doug Aylward, Bert Shannon, Chris Kohl, Jon Robnett, Brandon Straube, and Josh Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Frost, Jeff Culwell, Kevin Motley, Darrin Davies, Ryan Hulse, Justin Hopke, Scott Hodges and Troy Brown.
