Zandra Dowell

Zandra Dowell, 71, of Center died Monday, Nov. 27, 2017 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday at Bibb-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green with Brandon Mann officiating. Burial was in Vandalia Cemetery.

Zandra was born May 22, 1946 in Curryville the daughter of Olie N. and Lorena Scott Allison. On Aug. 1, 1969 in the Elm Grove Baptist Church, she married Larry Dowell. He survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Lisa Mann and husband, Brandon of Chesterfield, Angela Liljequist and husband, Dana of St. Louis and Karin Duffy and husband, Ken of Ballwin; grandchildren, Logan, Kaitlyn and Gavin Mann, Briana and Reagan Duffy; a brother, Dennis Allison and wife, Barb of Bowling Green; a niece, Joyce Fisher and husband, Mark of Bowling Green; and grand pups Marley and Sid.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Glenn Allison and Johnny Allison.

Zandra grew up in Curryville and graduated Bowling Green High School in 1964. She attended State Teachers College in Kirksville, moved to Vandalia, and started teaching after graduating college.

After marriage, she moved to rural Center. Zandra was a member of the Peno Baptist Church. For many years, she served as a Sunday School Teacher and played the piano at the Adiel Baptist Church in Frankford.

She helped in many ways at the Pike County Christian School. Zandra taught for 30 years, first as a Van-Far Junior High English teacher and later as the Van-Far Elementary librarian and media specialist. She was the 1st recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award at Van-Far.

Her hobbies include crafts, gardening and yard work. Zandra loved music, reading and riding the Kawasaki mule.

Pallbearers were Dana Liljequist, Ken Duffy, Brady Cowden, Tom Biggers, Gary Epperson, Raymond Kirtlink. Honorary pallbearers were Dennis Allison, Bob Gish, Randy McDonald, Charlie Spires and Brad Smith.
