Both Bowling Green Teams Take Down Host School To Open District Tournament

The Bowling Green Bobcats withstood a third quarter Winfield comeback to down the Warriors 59-53 in the opening round of the MSHSAA Class 3 District 7 Tournament on Saturday.

Corey Bell scored the first six points for Bowling Green and Kameron Worley drained a big three pointer in the first quarter, but the Bobcats led by only four after one.

The Winfield defense kept the game close for most of the half before Kaleo Dade caught fire with a ten point second quarter to push the Bowling Green lead to as many as ten points and an eight point advantage at the half.

Dade’s power to the hoop opened up Worley for another three and the big man drained one of his own in the quarter.

The Warriors came out of the locker room with new energy, pushing the play and drawing the Bobcats to some early foul trouble.

Leader Carter Bauer, held to just a basket in the first half, hit five of six free throws in the third quarter as Winfield tied the game at 31-31.

The Warriors outscored the Bobcats 12-6 in the quarter, but the Bobcats pulled back ahead 37-34 by the end of the frame.

Winfield resorted to the foul game early to try gain possession. Both Bauer and John Hogan fouled out in the first four minutes of the final quarter.

Bowling Green, who entered the four hitting fifty percent of their foul shots, improved in the last quarter. The Bobcats were successful on 20 of 28 free throws in the fourth and led by as many as eleven points in the fourth, needing to hit only one shot from the field down the stretch.
