Ruth L. Caldwell

Ruth L. Caldwell, 85, of Vandalia died Thursday, June 7, 2018, at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in Mexico.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Monday at Waters Funeral Home in Vandalia. Bro. Kenny Haddock officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Vandalia.

Visitation was from 9 a.m., until the time of the service Monday at Waters Funeral Home.

Ruth was born July 11, 1932 in Ralls County, the daughter of Orville Eugene and Etta Frances Storck Dowell. She was united in marriage to Hugh Ramsey (H.R.) Caldwell on Dec. 19, 1950. He preceded her in death on March 12, 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Caldwell and wife, Tona of Rush Hill, and Marshall Caldwell and wife, Amy of Jonesburg; two daughters, Linda Prior and husband, Tom of Curryville, and Ellen Orf of Bowling Green; grandchildren, Brandy Wojciuch and husband, David, Andrew Orf, Kelly Borchert and husband, Adam, Ian Caldwell, Matthew Caldwell, and Marlee Caldwell; step grandchildren, Bill Prior and wife, Donna, Mark Prior, and Jamie Prior and wife, Charla; great-grandchildren, Alison Wojciuch, Luke Wojciuch, and Luigi Caldwell; step grandchildren, Kileigh Prior and Colin Prior; sisters, Phyllis Dowell of Diamond Head, Miss., and Bonnie Krigbaum and husband, Jim of Hannibal; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Caldwell was preceded in death by two sisters, Christina Bradenburger and Helen Rice, and son-in-law, Ronnie Orf.

Ruth graduated from Vandalia High School in 1950, she went on to further her education at Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill.

Professionally Ruth worked at the garment factory in Vandalia and later worked at Hassien’s Grocery Store in Vandalia.

Ruth enjoyed gardening, going to Jennings Opry House in Frankford and listening to music, drinking morning coffee and catching up with the town happenings and socializing with friends.

Most of all Mrs. Caldwell enjoyed the time spent with her family, especially family gatherings and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events that she cherished the most.

Ruth attended Farber Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were David Wojciuch, Matthew Caldwell, Ian Caldwell, Andrew Orf, Adam Borchert, and Jamie Prior.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery or Van-Far Booster Club, c/o Waters Funeral Home.
