After a third place finish at state last season, the Clopton Lady Hawks will look to match or better the effort this season. The team lost three seniors including All-District/Conference/State starters Kelsea Dorsey and Katie Danuser. The team will also have to weather the loss of talented sophomore Spencer Hicks, who is out with an ACL injury. Coach Larry Lagemann pointed out these are significant losses both offensively and defensively. Returning to the roster will be three senior.
Emily Hanes returns at guard. Emily really works hard defensively and is a great competitor. We are expecting Emily to be one of our biggest outside shooting threats. Erika Brown returns at the forward position and can actually play any spot on the floor. Erika has been a solid defender her entire high school career and she really improved offensively last season and is our vocal leader on the floor. Erika was a second team All-District player last season. Lauren Jaeger returns at the post position. Lauren was first team All-Conference, All-District and All-State last season. Lauren has been our leading scorer and rebounder the last two seasons. She has worked hard to expand her game and be a threat near the basket or facing up from the perimeter. I am sure most team’s defensive schemes will focus on stopping Lauren. Sophomore Shelby Dunn returns at the point guard position. Shelby played really well down the stretch during last season’s postseason run. With a year of experience under her belt, I am looking for her to take on more of leadership role and be a floor general while she is on the court.
Lagemann added that key additions to the roster include juniors Amanda Klopcic and Joy Yates, sophomore Brittney Hamilton and freshman Lauren Lagemann.
We plan to play the same style that we have utilized that last few seasons. We will be a primarily man to man defensive team and want to pressure the ball all over the court and let our defense create easy baskets for us offensively. With the loss of Spencer Hicks to injury, our depth isn’t what I had anticipated and at times that may impact our pace of play, but our goal is to put pressure on our opponents both offensively and defensively.
Last year’s run to the Final Four and coming up short of a state championship has made the girls focus on getting back to Columbia and finishing even better. We have a lot of experienced players returning and our expectations are even higher than they were last season. We played a lot of ball this summer against larger schools to prepare us for the season. We have to be careful not to get complacent and comfortable with our progress and our accomplishments from last season.
