Every year the Louisiana Elks make the holidays a bit brighter for many Pike County families in need of a helping hand.
Last week more than 500 area children benefitted from the Elks’ holiday shopping trip to the new Walmart in Bowling Green. Each child selected for the program was able to purchase $75 in clothing. This is done through the Trimble Fund which provides nearly $40,000.
Buddy Sapp, of the Elks, said the number of children receiving assistance grew by around 150 this year. He added it has been a rough year for many families and it’s nice to be able to help.
Bob Kilby, chairman of the program, explained that applications are sent to all the schools in Pike County.
“Without the people in the schools we’d never keep this program going, so we thank them.”
A group of Elks go through the applications and determine those selected. For the past two years the event has grown considerably due to the need. Kilby pointed out the Elks are able to the program due to the generosity of George Trimble.
“It’s amazing the amount of good that is accomplished through the Trimble Fund.”
The Elks and may other organizations in Louisiana and the region are benefitted by the trust established by Mr. Trimble in the 1930s.
The Elks have provided the holiday shopping opportunity since 1983. The organization started by providing food and groceries and some toys to families in need. They since decided that providing clothing to children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade was the better option.
The Elks still provide food and funding for both the Hope Center in Bowling Green and the Louisiana Food Pantry. Kilby noted the Elks provide many man hours to projects in this area.
Those interested in donating to cause should contact the Elks Lodge, 120 N. 5th Street in Louisiana, 754-5890.
