Andy Fleming’s Buzzer-Beaters Lead To Back-To-Back Wins

Andy Fleming is a scoring powerhouse for the Silex Owls and he’s broken the hearts of two teams with buzzer-beating shots to help his team to the win.
A Fleming bucket forced overtime against Winfield on Thursday and nailed the win against Wellsville on Friday.
“He has a knack for it,” laughed Coach Chad Twellman.
The games last week were not the first examples of Fleming helping the Owls nab a win away from the competition.
The Winfield game was the first back for another of the Owls’ leading scorers, Matt Brown, who  was sidelined a few weeks with a leg injury. Brown and Fleming each had 23 points in that game.
“Even though Matt and Andy’s points were huge, Stephen Aubuchon was the saviour of that game. He’s been playing like an animal and he’s had huge rebounds,” Twellman said.
Despite a lead at the half, Winfield was able to scrap back and pull ahead before the buzzer beating shot that forced overtime. Silex got the job done in the extra period, winning 87-84.

Winfield: 12-22-18-22-10 • 84
Aubuchon had a double double in that game with 15 points and more than 10 rebounds. Kevin Mudd contributed 12 points.

The game against Wellsville was an up and down rollercoaster for both sides. Twellman said the Owls were cold at the start but found their shot late.
“We were 23 for 85 from the field, shooting something like 26 percent. With two minutes to go we were down by nine. We kept talking about not being impatient and getting quality sets and keeping the pressure on the glass,” Twellman said.
With 30 seconds to go the Owls were down by one when Fleming was sent to the line to drain two important free throws to put Silex up by one. With 18 seconds it was Wellsville’s Kyle Oliver at the line to hit two to put the Tigers back up by one. Much like the Bowling Green Tournament semifinal game against Clopton, the Owls got the ball across halfcourt with eight seconds remaining to call for a time out. With Brown and Fleming on the floor, Twellman set the play up for Aubuchon. While the 6’8” junior had a clear look, the ball rolled the rim and out of nowhere it was Fleming to zip in to push the ball back into the hoop for the win.
“It was just crazy.”

Wellsville: 16-18-16-16 • 66
Scoring for the Owls: Fleming, 17; Jonah Lasater, 13; Brown, 11; Kevin Mudd, 10; Aubuchon, 6; Daniel Mudd, 6; Matt Eisenbath, 2; Austin Fleming, 2.
Twellman pointed out the quality minutes off the bench from Lasater, Daniel Mudd and Austin Fleming contributed in large point to the win.
The Owls are now 10-9 for the season. Silex will host Community R-VI tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 16), Orchard Farm on Thursday and then a Homecoming rematch with Wellsville on Saturday. Hear that game on TribCast at www.thepeoplestribune.com.
