Flooding water claimed the life of a Louisiana woman last week at a creek along Pike County Road 252.
Dana Poage, 48, drowned after slipping at the “slabs” in the flooded Buffalo Creek about five miles south of Louisiana. Pike County Sheriff Stephen Korte said Poage was at the low water crossing fishing and swimming with her 12-year-old son and a friend. He said that according to the eyewitness accounts, Poage slipped on the lower concrete slab and was swept by the rushing water into a culvert where she became trapped and was unconscious.
The Louisiana and Buffalo Township fire departments and Louisiana police department responded to the 911 call.
Numerous attempts were made to pull Poage from the raging waters. Korte said that she was eventually released and resurfaced on the other side of the culvert. Poage was recovered approximately 30 minutes after arriving on the scene and was pronounced dead upon arrival to Pike County Memorial Hospital.
Poage’s obituary appears on page 4 of this week’s edition.
Sheriff Korte reminds people to use extreme caution around swift-moving flood waters and while driving in inclement conditions.
