Dutch, a five-year-old yellow labrador, is a happy dog back with his owners following a couple of days trapped in a hole near the Bowling Green Airport.
Bill Williams, flew in from Chicago last Tuesday. After landing, he let his two dogs out for a run. One returned, but Dutch did not. He searched that day and even took the plane up to look for the missing pooch. The next day police officers canvassed but Dutch remained lost and Williams returned to Chicago.
On Friday, July 23, crews with Alliance were cutting grass at the airport which is done about once a month. Suddenly Dutch’s eyes were spotted peering out from a water pit adjacent to the airport runway. Crews said that due to the height of the culvert and a couple of feet of standing water, the dog couldn’t escape and wasn’t spotted.
Howard Owens, of S&R animal control was called in to assist Public Works Director Bo Stinnett in rescuing Dutch. Due to exhaustion and disorientation, Dutch clamped down on one of his rescuers, but was otherwise happy to be out of the hole. Stinnett was treated for a fairly severe bite, but arrangements were made to get Dutch back home to Bill and Brandi Williams and his other canine friend.
Chief Wickenhauser said it was a very happy ending for the dog and praised Stinnett and the others who assisted in getting the dog back to his owner.
